Thailand’s largest island, Phuket is one of the world’s most popular holiday destinations. More than eight million international travellers visited the island last year, the majority of whom were attracted by the warm weather, beautiful beaches and tropical seas, plus Thailand’s famously charming people who make all visitors feel welcome.
While Phuket is an island, it often feels like part of the mainland as it is connected to the rest of Thailand by a bridge at its northern tip. The island’s international airport is also in the north, and from these two gateways the majority of visitors head down to the beach resorts of Phuket’s west coast. This spectacular stretch of coastline features a seemingly endless series of beautiful bays and sandy beaches, the most famous of which, Patong, is now a lively tourist hub.
Other popular west coast beaches include Karon, Surin, Bangtao, Naithon, Mai Khao and Kata, all of which feature fine stretches of sand lapped by the Andaman Sea. The area around Kamala Beach is often referred to as “Millionaire’s Mile”, due to the high property prices and luxurious collection of hotels, resorts and villas that have been developed in the area. In the south, Promthep Cape provides a unique viewpoint to watch the sun rise and set.
The quieter east coast of Phuket is less sandy, but serves as a gateway to southern Thailand’s most dramatic seascapes, including the towering karsts of Phang Nga Bay. Sheltered from the Indian Ocean, these sheltered seas create the perfect natural environment for tropical flora and fauna to flourish, including colourful marine life.
This rich diversity makes Thailand’s largest island an ideal destination for every occasion. Whether you’re seeking a blissful beach break, a fun-filled vacation or a cultural adventure, Phuket is the perfect choice.
